Background
The first book of a planned Clockman series is a thriller with an insight into the clock making industry in Britain in the mid 1700’s, the social fabric of the time, and the political realities around the English Channel.
I am sure you will enjoy meeting the Stumbels family and Master Stumbels’ recently graduated apprentice with the attendant adventures which follow.
Book Review by John Hunter – Editor Clocks Magazine
The two books we are reviewing this month (Nov. 2016) are unusual. That is to say they are not the type of book we usually review, but in the run-up to Christmas we thought it might be a good idea to review a couple of volumes our readers might consider as Christmas gifts for their nearest and dearest And both, I hasten to add, have a completely horological theme.
The first is THE ‘PRENTICED JOURNEYMAN by our very own Laurie Penman.
We have reviewed Laurie’s books before, but the difference with this one is that it is a work of fiction! Laurie has actually been writing works of fiction since 1972, more than ten years before he started writing non-fiction books. The book under review, the first of a series, is about the putative private life of an actual eighteenth century clockmaker, John Richards, who was apprenticed to Wiliam Stumbels, a Devonian clockmaker who worked near the house in which Laurie Penman was living when he conceived the idea.
The story begins on Richards’ first day as a journeyman clockmaker, still working for Stumbels. By accident he finds a hidden package, which he takes and opens. Inside, he finds a pistol and ammunition, some documents and a large sum of money … but if you want to find out more about what John Richards gets up to you’ll have to buy it.
THE ‘PRENTICED JOURNEYMAN
by Laurie Penman (2016) is published by the author. www. clockrepairandrestoration.co.uk ISBNISBN-13: 978-1540624208
Collectors are increasingly undertaking their own repairs and restorations
With the high cost of labour in our “through away” society, mechanical clocks have become primarily collector’s items, now replaced for general use in the main with electronic time pieces,
Today mechanical clocks sold by many outlets have been “repaired” using short-cut methods to keep cost of repair down.
Laurie Penman’s aim is to enable collectors and repairers/restorers to develop their skills in Horology to properly return these historically important clocks to prime working condition and to preserve the “Art of Clock Making” for the coming generations.
Teaching the skill to make replacement parts when required or to undertake major and technically challenging restoration are key aims of these books.
